Progression through the pathway is based on development, performance, fitness, assessment and experience. Each stage provides referees with the opportunity to grow their knowledge and confidence.
Introduction to Rugby Officiating
The starting point for anyone interested in becoming a rugby referee. Candidates are introduced to the laws of the game, the role of the referee and the principles of safe and effective officiating.
Development Referee
New referees begin gaining practical match experience while developing their understanding of the laws, positioning, communication and decision-making.
Regional Referee
Referees who demonstrate consistent performance progress into regional competition, taking charge of increasingly demanding fixtures while continuing their development.
National Panel
Experienced referees who meet the required standards can progress to the national panel and officiate at the highest levels of domestic rugby.
Elite & International
The highest level of the pathway. Referees with the required performance, fitness, experience and assessment standards may progress towards international officiating.
